Cork Airport, and I'm Stumbling. I am barely aware of my surroundings. I don't need to be. All the time in the queue for security, I was playing away with a borrowed iPod. No SU on it, unfortunately.

However, my new toy does have Sat. Nav. which means I can stand in the middle of Shinjuku Station in Tokyo at rush-hour, push the button, 'my' co-ordinates will fly up into space and Google Maps will magically locate me...

That's where I'll be then, in case anyone's looking for me.

'If they bring their savagery over here, we'll meet it with a savagery of our own.'

That war is over pretty much, but this mentality still persists with the Irish. We show defiance and claim victory by causing ourselves more pain than our enemies can. And then we entertain ourselves by freely talking, singing, reading, dancing and drinking about it. For a long time. We fully expect the rest of the world to be as charmed by that as we are.

No, Freud couldn't figure it out either. The Romans knew better than to come here. We still make the English slightly nervous. Especially when we, y'know, do the Irish thing.

This is quite a shouty version
by Sinead O'Connor of 'Oro, 'se do bheatha 'bhaile' , a song every Irish child belts out in the classroom at some stage. Mix it with a key segment of Ken Loach's interesting film and it gets the ould blood going every now and then. Nothing to do with the Brits really.

'God Bless the Minister, whoever he is.'

Government announces that plans to abolish 'early house' pubs are to be abandoned. Basically, early houses cater for drinkers who need pubs to be open at sunrise. There're only about 50 of these establishments in the country and there've been no new ones since 1962. So, you can imagine how un-trendy they are. The clientele is mostly male, and would not be what you might call 'hip'.

Once upon a time, when I used fraternize with a certain journalist/legendary drinker, I was briefly familiar with a few such establishments around the Burgh Quay/Custom House docks area of Dublin. I recall, with a mixture of fondness and horror, a few sunrises in those places. Fondness because they offered a low-key, non-judgmental, smoke-filled dingy refuge for all sorts, from night dockers, prison officers and newsmen to certain kinds of women, some of them brittle, desperate, Untouchables. Horror because I remember those places were only about the drink. And nothing else.

Still, the country is in such a hanging mood with the corrupt fukkers in government, we're ready to get real sentimental about anything pre-economic boom. So the Irish people shout as one: hands off our authentic hopeless Irish drunks...

From the page:

"Reminiscing about late 1940s Harlem in his 1964 autobiography, Malcolm X referred to the word hippy as a term African Americans used to describe a specific type of white man who "acted more Negro than Negroes.""

Oooh, he said the h-word!

I could dress it up in fancy language, but I can't, so I won't.

Based on this performance alone, I'd show up in Robert Plant's dressing-room/bath-tub/tour-bus/parking-lot faster than you can say, 'I'm with the band'.
